International Railway Strategic Management Institute

A dynamic international programme for senior railway executives

The International Railway Strategic Management Institute (IRSMI) was founded by the International Union of Railways (UIC) with the mission to create an internationally renowned educational programme for high-level managers and leaders within the railway industry.

 

 

Since its inception IRSMI has successfully deployed 5 editions of the Senior Managers Programme. For this latest version, IRSMI has teamed-up with EML Executive Development, to deliver a highly applied programme for Railway Executives.

The goal of this partnership is to create a new and streamlined version of the programme that builds on the strong academic foundations of previous editions while integrating a new approach making the programme more pragmatic, more engaging and more focused on the specific skills and competencies that senior railway managers need to navigate their rapidly changing industry.

Programme Objectives :
- Develop a breadth of transversal business skills consistent with the latest in international best practice;
- Build strong leadership competencies to maximize the personal impact of senior railway managers;
- Encourage international benchmarking and networking through a diversity of participants, academics and industry experts.

Programme Focus

The IRSMI Senior Managers Programme was designed to maximise participants ability to apply new learning to their careers. To achieve this goal the programme team has integrated five key axes of focus:

ROI - The new IRSMI Senior Managers Programme proposes a greater focus on promoting learning transfer to the job, because the more participants are using their new skills the greater the ROI for their organization. Participants receive specific tools to develop key competencies including a Personal Development Guide based on an in depth assessment of their individual competencies and objectives.

ACTION- The new IRSMI Senior Managers Programme is built around a strategic “Team Based Learning Project” that both challenges participants to apply new learning to a real world problem and stimulate their ability to project these new competencies into their everyday responsibilities.

DIVERSITY- The new IRSMI Senior Managers Programme brings together not only a diverse array of participants and world-class faculty it will also strives to represent a diverse array of ideas and perspectives on the railway industry through expert testimonies, on-site visits and targeted learning missions throughout the programme.

GLOBAL ISSUES - The IRSMI Senior Managers Programme has always and will continue to highlight the global trends and realities shaping the railway industry and the world at large by bringing together top minds from both academia and the railway industry.

STRATEGY - The new IRSMI Senior Managers Programme aims to give participants a holistic and global vision of the firm, encouraging the development of strategic and transversal thinking and enhancing the participants’ capacity to translate good strategy into key actions to drive the development of their organisations.

Programme Design

The programme team has developed an innovative blended learning programme, incorporating a number of different learning platforms.

Project Based Learning (PBL)

PBL forms the back-bone of the IRSMI Senior Managers Programme. Participants are required to complete an ongoing project throughout the programme related to the railway industry. The project becomes the catalyst which drives participants desire to engage in the learning process creating opportunities for applying newly learned competencies.

Ongoing Project Coaching

Participants receive professional project coaching as they move through the programme. The coaches spend time with the participants in a working relationship to move the projects forward and provide support for participants as unexpected challenges arise.

Personalized Competencies Development

Each participant is provided with a detailed personal development handbook. The personalized handbooks are based on EML Executive Development's in-depth competencies assessment tool. This powerful tool helps participants to identify key areas for their own development as an Organisational Leader and manager, focusing on the competencies necessary to lead effectively in todays organizations.

Efficient Training Design

In order to reduce the time participants must pass in residential sessions, much of the programme work is completed by participants in distance mode via a collaborative online platform. Residential sessions are used to drive home concepts and provide intense interaction with professors and teams. In addition each residential session requires pre- and post-session work demanding reflection on and application of competencies covered in the programme.
